Sclerotherapy

When patients visit our facilities complaining of varicose veins or spider veins, one of the first treatment methods we may choose to implement is known as sclerotherapy. This treatment involves injecting a salt solution of foam into the affected veins to help eliminate bulging and discomfort. At the time of your first appointment, our team can help determine if sclerotherapy is right for you.

When To Consider Sclerotherapy

While varicose veins are primarily a cosmetic issue, that does not mean they should be left untreated. Even if they do not harm your self-esteem, not trying to eliminate them can lead to unfortunate health problems. Our team has seen this happen before and wants to help you avoid this. That is why we recommended going through with this procedure if you begin to be affected by any of the following:

  • Pain.
  • Aches or feelings of heaviness around your veins.
  • The skin surrounding the veins is becoming discolored or is developing a rash.

What To Expect

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure. A needle is placed into the affected veins so the solution or foam can be injected into it. While general anesthesia is typically not required, you may experience a slight pinch when the needle is inserted. Once the solution is injected, you may feel burning or tingling sensations as well. To prevent blood from re-entering the vein after it has collapsed, you may be required to wear compression stockings for some time following the procedure. You may also need more than one session to get the desired effects.
