The area may be swollen and red to the touch with a sensation of warmth. This is because the vein causes an inflammation reaction as it closes. This is expected to occur a week after radiofrequency or laser ablation treatment, and 3–6 weeks after sclerotherapy treatment.

In some rare cases, varicose veins may reappear or an infection may develop.
